Feeding children in Union County becomes even more important during summer break when school meals are no longer available. Food for Families helps support local children and families through programs like the Backpack Program.

Breakfast. Lunch. Reliable meals during the week. When school ends for summer, that support changes. But hunger doesn’t.

In fact, for many families, summer becomes even harder when feeding children in Union County.

The need for food doesn’t disappear just because school is out.

At Food for Families, we see this every year.

The Reality of Summer Hunger

Many people assume summer brings relief.

For families struggling with food insecurity, summer can create even more pressure.

Children are home more. Grocery bills rise. Parents are stretched even thinner.

Families who were already struggling suddenly have even more gaps to fill.

That’s where the Backpack Program becomes so important.

Backpack Needs Don’t Stop in Summer

During the school year, Food for Families provides approximately 1,700 backpacks every week to help children facing hunger.

Even during the summer months, that need remains significant.

Right now, approximately 600 backpacks are still needed each week.

That means hundreds of children in our community still rely on this support.

These are not just backpacks.

They are meals. They are peace of mind. They are relief for parents trying to make ends meet.

Every backpack represents a child who has access to food they may not otherwise have.

The Cost of Feeding Children Adds Up Quickly

One backpack cost about $25 to fill per month.

That means:

1,700 backpacks during the school year = $42,500 each month

600 backpacks during summer = $15,000 each month

Those numbers are powerful because they tell a real story.

The need is ongoing. The cost is real. And the impact matters.

Every backpack represents a child who has access to food they may not otherwise have.

Supporting Families Year-Round

Hunger does not take a summer break.

Children still need food. Families still need support. The need continues.

That’s why Food for Families remains committed to showing up year-round.

Because every child deserves access to food-not just during the school year, but every week of the year.

The Need Is Real. So Is the Need for Support.

The need for food in our community is real.

And the need for donor support is just as real.

Every $25 donation helps provide food for a child in need for a month.

That gift may seem small.

But to a child and family facing hunger, it can mean everything.

Together, we can continue making sure children in Union County have access to food all year long. Please consider making a gift to Food for Families today.
