February 29th, 2024, an extra day every 4 years. A ‘free’ day. A day to lounge around, or try something new, or go the extra mile and make a difference. This year Perdue Farms chose the latter and loaded up 70 tractor trailers with 3.3 million pounds of chicken, hit the road, and headed to 198 Feeding America® partner food banks in areas where their associates live and work.
Got Chicken?
Perdue Farms donates over 3 million Pounds of Chicken. Why? Well, an extra day in the year means that 44 million people, including 13 million children facing food insecurity, have an extra day to worry about where their meals are coming from. Perdue Farms decided to Help Fill the Leap Day Food Gap with those tractor trailers full of chicken.
Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina received a couple of those big trucks and as a Partnering Agency we, along with a few others, were invited to join their CEO, staff, and volunteers to witness Perdue’s good works in action.
After a few TV interviews with SHFB CEO, Kay Carter and our Executive Director, Amy Niccolai the Chicken-ing began! It was incredible to witness Amy’s excitement (IYKYK) watching our new reefer truck receive our allotment of Perdue’s donation. It was a day Food for Families didn’t have to worry about supplying our home delivery families and our mobile pantry families with high nutritional value protein.
It was an extra day we all received in 2024. An extra day to solve problems in our communities. An extra day our neighbors were nourished. An extra day we were so thankful to be a part of.
